WordPress plugin, free on wordpress.org

Versilink

Replaces a PDF, price list or catalogue in place, so the links already sent by email or posted in an ad open the new file. Every version is kept, and any earlier one can be restored.

The problem

New file, new address, broken links.

WordPress never overwrites a file. Upload a new price list and it gets a new name or lands in this month’s folder, so its address changes. The links already in emails, ads, a Google Business Profile or a printed QR code keep opening the old file, or nothing at all.

What the free plugin does

  • Turns a file from the Media Library into a Document, with “Create Document” in the library or on the file’s edit screen.
  • Each new version replaces the file at its current address, so the links already sent open the new content. The file’s Media Library URL keeps working.
  • Keeps a version history with an optional note on each version. Users who manage the Document can download earlier versions and restore any of them.
  • Keeps earlier versions in a separate folder, out of the Media Library.
  • Gives a Document a short permanent link if you want one, such as /docs/price-list, that always opens the current file. The prefix can be changed, and the plugin warns when it clashes with a page, post type or taxonomy.
  • Turning the plugin off stops the /docs/ links until you turn it back on. The files and their own addresses keep working. Deleting a Document removes its history, and deleting the plugin removes its data, but neither touches the files in the Media Library.

A new version of another type, such as a DOCX in place of a PDF, gets a new address, and the old one keeps serving the last PDF. The plugin warns about it and shows the old address.

The current file is public, like any file in the Media Library. Versilink is made for documents you share, such as price lists and guides, not for private ones.
